Picture this: You are a child who wants to learn, but your world does not allow it. Your home is too small, too unstable. You wake up to responsibilities beyond your age. School should be a refuge, a place where you can dream freely, but instead, it comes with conditions—you must afford it, you must have time, you must be "smart enough." What happens to the children who do not meet these conditions? Do they stop learning? Do they stop dreaming?
For children in Khandagiri, Shradhapalli, Khandagiri Bari, and Kolathia, this is not a hypothetical situation—it is their reality. Education is the first thing they lose when survival takes priority. Some are forced into child labor, others are trapped in unstable homes, and many, especially girls, are expected to abandon their education before they even understand its power. The pandemic deepened these struggles, pushing more children into uncertainty, where learning became a distant luxury instead of a right.
Let’s look at one of such critical story:
Rohan (name changed) is a 9-year-old boy from Shradhapalli, Bhubaneswar. His father, once a construction worker, lost his job during the pandemic, and his mother started working as a housemaid to sustain the family. With no support for his education at home, Rohan, like many other children, struggled with reading and writing. He attended school but never truly learned.
"He would stare at the blackboard, but the words meant nothing," his mother said. "He started avoiding school, saying it was useless." Without intervention, Rohan would have become another dropout statistic, yet another child left behind by a system that failed him.
During a crucial moment of their formative years, lakhs of poor children in Bhubaneswar — like Rohan — lost not only their means of education, but also their essential social connections.
Further, according to the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2023, approximately 64% of students aged 14 to 18 in Odisha, are unable to perform division in mathematics. This highlights the widening gap in foundational literacy and numeracy across Odisha, underscoring the urgent need for targeted interventions to equip children with essential learning skills.
Despite this, there are limited interventions that focus on foundational learning alongside emotional and creative development—a gap that Unmukt Learning Centre exists to fill.
At Unmukt Learning Centre, we are here to rewrite this reality. Because education should never come with conditions. It should never be dependent on privilege, money, or luck. It should be a constant—like love, like hope, like the right to dream without limits. And above all, it should be joyful.
ULC exists because no child should have to fight for the right to learn. Because education should be free, fearless, and unconditional. Because learning should be a celebration, not a burden.
Segment of the population it will serve
Children from age 6 onward from low-income families, who are at risk of dropping out and require sustained support until they are well settled in life with a stable job or position.
Program Duration
A 12-month initiative, designed to support children in overcoming learning gaps and prepare them for formal schooling and lifelong learning.
Focus Areas
Unmukt Learning Centre is built around the PEACE model, fostering Physical Development, Emotional Development, Academic Development, Creative Development, and Environmental Action. Rooted in holistic learning, it recognizes each child as a harmonious blend of body, mind, and soul.
Today, 50+ children call ULC their safe space, their playground of knowledge, their home for self-discovery. But beyond these walls, our work continues—building a culture of learning in Shradhapalli, proving that education is not for the privileged, but for every child who dares to dream.
Out of 11 students who qualified for the State Level Judo Meet, 8 returned with medals—including Gold. Beyond sports, ULC children have won multiple awards across school and cluster-level competitions, proving that when given the right opportunities, they can not just participate, but lead, inspire, and shine.
At ULC, we do not just teach children. We empower them.
Join us to make this world a little better than today!
